ASTM A179 specifies low carbon steel seamless pipes primarily used in heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer apparatus. This specification ensures the pipes meet the necessary mechanical and dimensional standards for efficient heat transfer.
Key Specifications ofASTM A179 Low Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe
- Material:
Low carbon steel.
- Manufacturing Process:
Seamless.
- Size Range:
Outside Diameter: 1/8" to 3" [3.2 mm to 76.2 mm].
Wall Thickness: 0.015" to 0.500" [0.4 mm to 12.7 mm].
- Chemical Composition:
Carbon (C):≤0.06%
Manganese (Mn): 0.27-0.63%
Phosphorus (P):≤0.035%
Sulfur (S):≤0.035%
- Mechanical Properties:
Tensile Strength:≥325 MPa (47,000 psi)
Yield Strength:≥180 MPa (26,000 psi)
Elongation:≥35% for gauge length 2 inches (50 mm)
- Heat Treatment:
Pipes should be cold drawn and then subjected to heat treatment to relieve stress.
- Surface Condition:
The pipes should have a smooth surface finish, free from scale, oxidation, and other surface imperfections.
- Mechanical Tests Required:
Flattening Test—One flattening test shall be made on specimens from each of two tubes from each lot or fraction thereof.
Flaring Test—One flaring test shall be made on specimens from each of two tubes from each lot or fraction thereof.
Flange Test—When specified as a substitute for the flaring test, for tubes having a wall thickness (actual mean wall) less than 10 % of the outside diameter, one test shall be made on specimens from each of two tubes from each lot.
Hardness Test—Rockwell hardness tests shall be made on specimens from two tubes from each lot. The term lot applies to all tubes, prior to cutting, of the same nominal diameter and wall thickness which are produced from the same heat of steel. When final heat treatment is in a batch-type furnace, a lot shall include only those tubes of the same size and the same heat which are heat treated in the same furnace charge. When the final heat treatment is in a continuous furnace, a lot shall include all tubes of the same size and heat, heat treated in the same furnace at the same temperature, time at heat, and furnace speed.
Hydrostatic Test—Each tube shall be subjected to the hydrostatic test, or, instead of this test, a nondestructive electric test may be used when specified by the purchaser.
- Dimensional Tolerances:
Outside Diameter:±0.1 mm.
Wall Thickness:±10% of the specified thickness.
Length: Pipes are usually supplied in single random lengths (16-22 feet) or double random lengths (22-44 feet).
- Marking and Certification:
Pipes should be marked with the manufacturer's name or trademark, specification number, size, and heat number. Certification should include chemical composition and mechanical properties test results.
Summary
ASTM A179 low carbon steel seamless pipes are essential components in heat exchangers and condensers due to their excellent heat transfer properties, mechanical strength, and precise dimensional tolerances. Ensuring adherence to ASTM A179 specifications guarantees high-quality, reliable pipes for efficient and safe heat transfer applications.
