SSAW steel pipe refers to a type of steel pipe with a spiral seam that is manufactured using strip coil as raw material, formed through extrusion at normal temperatures, and welded using the automatic double wire double-sided submerged arc welding process. This discussion will focus on the classification of SSAW steel pipes.

SSAW steel pipe (SY5036-83) is designed for pressurized fluid transportation, primarily used in oil and natural gas pipeline conveyance.

SSAW steel pipe (SY5038-83) is also intended for pressurized fluid transportation but is welded using the high-frequency welding method. It boasts a strong load-bearing capacity, good plasticity, and is easy to weld and shape.

SSAW steel pipe (SY5037-83) is utilized for general low-pressure fluid transmission. It is welded using either the double-sided automatic submerged arc welding method or a one-side welding method, and is commonly used for water, gas, air, steam, and other low-pressure fluid delivery applications.

Currently, the general standards for SSAW steel pipes are categorized as follows:

- SY/T5037-2000 (ministerial standard, also known as spiral submerged arc welded steel pipe for ordinary fluid transportation pipelines).

- GB/T9711.1-1997 (Chinese standard, also known as pipes for oil and gas industry transportation).

- API-5L (American Petroleum Institute, also known as pipeline steel pipes; divided into PSL1 and PSL2 categories).

- SY/T5040-92 (spiral seam submerged arc welded pipe for pile applications).
