1. Definition

Black steel pipe is uncoated steel and its dark color comes from iron oxides that form on its surface during the manufacturing process. When steel pipe is forged, a black oxide scale forms on its surface, giving it the finish of this type of pipe.

Carbon steel pipe is the most common type of steel pipe. It is made of steel ingot or solid round steel through perforation to make capillary tube, and then hot rolled, cold rolled or cold drawn. It can be divided into seamless steel pipe, straight seam steel pipe and spiral steel pipe.

2. Material Composition

Both carbon steel pipe and black steel pipe are made of elements such as iron and carbon. The main difference between the two is that carbon steel pipe contains less carbon, which makes it harder and more brittle, but also makes it easier to weld, process and forming.

3. Manufacturing Process

Carbon steel pipe is made by first heating iron ore to high temperatures (about 2100°F), then adding carbon to form a liquid slag. The slag is then cooled and formed into cakes, which are then rolled into tubes. Black steel pipe is made in a similar way, but the main difference is that the iron ore is not heated as hot (about 1700°F) and does not require the addition of carbon.

4. Characteristics

Carbon steel pipe is harder and more brittle than black steel pipe, and it is easier to weld, process and form. But carbon steel piping is also susceptible to corrosion, weakening the material over time.

5. Applications

Carbon steel pipe is most commonly used in structural applications such as buildings and bridges. Black steel pipe is manufactured seamless, which makes it commonly used to transport fluids such as water, natural gas, and oil.
