Drill collars are extremely heavy industrial tubing used for drilling into the ground and are used in conjunction with drill pipe. They are primarily used to reduce the weight of drill bits, but can also be used as shock absorbers to dampen the vibration and impact forces caused by drilling.

Drill Collar Types:

1. Slick Drill Collar: made of ordinary alloy steel, the cross section of the pipe is circular inside and outside;

2. Spiral Drill Collar: made of common alloy steel, drill collar with spiral grooves on the outer surface of the pipe;

3. Non Magnetic Drill Collar: It is made of low magnetic permeability stainless steel alloy steel, and the inner and outer diameters of the cross-section of the pipe body are circular.

The Role Of Drill Collar:

Provides weight on bit (WOB)

Minimizes bit stability issues caused by vibration, wobble and jump

Minimizes directional control issues by providing stiffness to the BHA.

Keeps the drill string under tension to reduce bending stress and fatigue-induced failures
