The selection of a suitable method depends on site-specific conditions and should be guided by comprehensive soil investigations. Conventional techniques often employ vibratory hammers, impact hammers, hydraulic presses, or a combination of these tools to accommodate varying ground conditions.

1. Panel Driving

In this method, sheet piles are interlocked into panels before installation, guided by a stiff frame or template to ensure vertical alignment. This technique is especially effective in soft soils, where pile deviation is a concern, and in cases requiring the use of long piles. While more time-intensive due to the need for threading and handling, it is commonly used for structures such as underground car parks and basements.

2. Panel Driving with Staggering

A variation of the standard panel driving method, this approach involves alternating sheet piles—some reinforced at the tip—being driven to greater depths. The staggering technique is particularly beneficial in compact soils, enhancing stability and penetration.

3. Pitch and Drive

This method installs sheet piles individually, threading and driving each pile to its final depth. It is favored for its speed and cost-efficiency, especially in non-compact soils or temporary works where precision is less critical. Piles used here are generally shorter. Hydraulic presses, including Giken silent pressing rigs, are typically used for this method to minimize noise, making it suitable for sensitive urban environments.
