Advantages and Disadvantages of LSAW Carbon Steel Pipe

LSAW (Longitudinal submerge arc welding) carbon steel pipe is a type of SAW pipe made of steel plates, which with large diameter, thick wall, high pressure and low temperature resistance. Today, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of LSAW carbon steel pipe.

Advantages of LSAW Carbon Steel Pipe:

Longitudinal submerged arc welding carbon steel pipes can destroy the steel ingot casting structure, refine the steel grains, eliminate microstructural defects, make the steel structure dense, and improve the mechanical properties. This improvement is mainly reflected in the rolling direction, making the longitudinal submerged arc welded steel pipe no longer isotropic to a certain extent; bubbles, cracks and looseness formed during pouring can also be welded under high temperature and high pressure.

Disadvantages of LSAW Carbon Steel Pipe:

1. Residual stress caused by uneven cooling. Residual stress is the internal self-balanced stress without external force. Such residual stress exists in hot-rolled steel of various cross-sections. Generally, the larger the cross-sectional size of steel, the greater the residual stress. Although residual stress is self-balancing, it still has a certain impact on the performance of steel components under the action of external forces. For example, it can adversely affect deformation, stability and fatigue resistance.

2. After welding, the non-metallic inclusions inside the longitudinal submerged arc welded carbon steel pipe are pressed into thin sheets, and delamination occurs. Delamination greatly reduces the through-thickness properties of LSAW steel pipe and may shrink at the weld. Interlaminar tearing occurs. The local strain caused by the shrinkage of the weld often reaches several times the yield strain, which is much larger than the strain caused by the load.
