ASTM A500 Grade C is a commonly used cold-formed seamless and welded carbon structural steel pipe. Among the three grades specified in ASTM A500, Grade C offers the highest mechanical properties, with a minimum tensile strength of 425 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa. It is particularly suited for structural applications demanding superior strength and reliability.

Scope of ASTM A500 Grade C Structural Steel Tubing
This specification covers round, square, rectangular, and other specially shaped hollow structural steel tubing, with dimensions up to 88 inches (2235 mm) in circumference and wall thicknesses up to 1 inch (25.4 mm).
Manufacturing Process of ASTM A500 Grade C Structural Steel Tubing
The raw material for these tubes may be produced through either the basic oxygen process or an electric furnace.
ASTM A500 Grade C pipes are manufactured using seamless methods or electric resistance welding (ERW) and shaped by cold-forming techniques.
Cold Forming of ASTM A500 Grade C Structural Steel Tubing
Cold forming refers to reshaping or resizing steel pipes through plastic deformation at or near room temperature, without heating them to a high-temperature state. This method ensures dimensional accuracy and uniform mechanical properties.

Dimensional Tolerances of ASTM A500 Grade C Structural Steel Tubing
ASTM A500 specifies dimensional requirements for outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, squareness of sides, corner radius, and twist. For detailed limits, please refer to ASTM A500 Structural Tubing.
Appearance of ASTM A500 Grade C Structural Steel Tubing
The surface of all pipes must be uniform, smooth, and free from harmful defects.
A surface defect is considered unacceptable when its depth exceeds 10% of the specified wall thickness.
Defects deeper than 33% of the specified wall thickness are not permitted under any circumstances.
Defects between 10%–33% may be repaired by:
Completely removing the defect by chipping or grinding down to sound metal.
Performing repair welding using a low-hydrogen welding process.
Grinding excess weld metal to achieve a clean, workmanlike finish.
Minor surface marks such as handling scratches, roll marks, shallow pits, or indentations do not require removal, provided they remain within the specified wall thickness.
Pipe Ends of ASTM A500 Grade C Structural Steel Tubing
Ends of structural pipes shall be cut flat, and all burrs must be removed.
