Pile pipe typically consist of seamless, welded, or spiral welded steel pipe with wall thicknesses ranging from 0.109 in. to 2.500 in. (2.8 to 63.5 mm) and diameter ranging from 8" (203.2mm) to 48" (1219mm).

Pipe piles are used as friction piles or end bearing piles, the driving of these piles can be done with the help of an open or closed bottom. Therefore, we have:

- Open End Pipe Pile

Primarily used to penetrate solid or rock formations. Open pipe piles sink into the soil after piling. The soil inside the steel pipe is removed by compressed air or water jet process. After the steel pipe is driven to the required depth, standard specification concrete is poured into the steel pipe.

- Close End Pipe Pile

A conical element made of steel or cast iron is attached to the open bottom by welding. Once the pipe is driven into the soil, the pipe is filled with a sufficient amount of concrete.

The basic specification for pipe piles is ASTM A252, which is divided into three grades:

• Minimum yield strength of 30 ksi (207 MPa) for Grade 1;

• Class 2 has a minimum yield strength of 35 ksi (241 MPa) for Grade 2; and

• Minimum yield force of 45 ksi (310 MPa) for Grade 3.

Characteristics of Steel Pipe Piles:

1. There are many specifications and various choices

2. Strong bearing capacity

3. The pile length is easy to adjust, which is beneficial to improve economic benefits

4. Slight soil extrusion
