AS/NZS 1074 is the Australian and New Zealand standard for general-purpose steel pipes and fittings. Here is an overview of AS 1074 / NZS 1074 steel pipe.

Union Steel Industry Co., Ltd is professional steel pipes manufacturer, for more details, please contact:sales@union-steels.com

Scope and Specifications of AS 1074 / NZS 1074 Steel Pipe

This standard applies to two main categories of steel pipe:

Threaded steel pipes and fittings as specified in AS 1722.1.

Plain-end steel pipes with a nominal size ranging from DN 8 to DN 150.

Pipes manufactured to this standard, with the latest version being AS 1074-2018, are available in three distinct wall thicknesses: light, medium, and heavy.

Manufacturing and Finishes of AS 1074 / NZS 1074 Steel Pipe

AS/NZS 1074 pipes can be produced through either a seamless or a welded process. The most common welded method is Electric Resistance Welding (ERW). The standard also specifies three available end finishes for the pipes:

Plain-end

Screwed (threaded)

Socketed

Carbon Equivalent (CE)
CE, or Carbon Equivalent, is a calculated value used to assess the weldability of steel. It is determined using the following formula:
CE = C + Mn / 6

Mechanical Properties of AS 1074 / NZS 1074 Steel Pipe

Minimum yield strength: 195 MPa

Minimum tensile strength: 320–460 MPa

Elongation: Not less than 20%

Tightness Testing Requirements
Each steel pipe must undergo one of the following pressure-tightness tests to ensure quality:

1. Hydrostatic Test
The pipe must sustain a hydrostatic pressure of 5 MPa for a sufficient duration without any signs of leakage.

2. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Eddy Current Testing: Performed in accordance with AS 1074 Appendix B

Ultrasonic Testing: Conducted as specified in AS 1074 Appendix C

AS 1074 Steel Pipe Weights and Dimensional Tolerances
Steel pipes are categorized into three wall thickness classes: light, medium, and heavy. Each class has distinct outer diameter (OD) tolerances and weight specifications. The following chart (not included here) outlines the nominal weights and permissible OD deviations for each grade.
